Why Switching Off Feels Impossible
What it feels like
You’re tired but wired. Your body feels heavy, but your mind keeps scanning. You sit down to relax and immediately think of what you’ve forgotten, what you should prepare for tomorrow, or what you could be doing instead. Even things that should help you switch off, like watching something, reading, or lying in bed, feel slightly tense. There’s a low-level buzz underneath it all. And if you do stop, there’s often guilt. A sense you should be using the time better.
It can feel like you’re never fully off duty, just briefly paused.
Why this happens
When stress sticks around, your body gets used to being on alert. It keeps looking for problems to fix, even when nothing urgent is happening. After a while, being “on” feels normal.
At the same time, many people carry quiet rules like “I should only rest when everything is done” or “I need to stay on top of things.” The problem is, everything is never done. So rest keeps getting pushed back.
Put those together and switching off isn’t just a choice. It’s something your system has fallen out of practice with.
Practical Pause
Try 4 to 6 breathing for two minutes: inhale for 4, exhale for 6. A longer exhale helps your body slow down. Do it before bed or before leaving work.
Ask yourself...
When was the last time I felt genuinely off duty, and what rule would I have to challenge to feel that again?
