I’m Functioning… but I Feel Flat
What it feels like
You’re doing what needs to be done. You show up, reply, attend, deliver. From the outside, it can look like things are fine.
But inside, it feels thinner. You might notice you laugh less, or that it takes more effort to care. Even things you used to enjoy feel a bit dull. You go through the motions. Evenings pass without much landing. Weekends don’t quite recharge you.
It’s not dramatic. It’s more like the colour has faded.
Why this happens
When there’s too much coming in and not enough space to recover, your system will eventually turn the volume down.
Feeling less helps you keep going in the short term. The trade off is that it also turns down interest, energy, and connection.
Over time, “flat” can start to feel normal, which makes it easy to miss how far things have shifted.
Practical Pause
Do a quick “volume check” three times today. Pause for 30 seconds and notice: body, thoughts, mood. Name one word for each.
Then add one small lift. Not a task, just a nudge. Step outside for two minutes. Put on one song and listen to it. Take three slow breaths and look around the room.
The aim is not to fix anything. It is to notice and gently turn the volume up a notch.
Ask yourself...
When did things start to feel flatter?
Where in my day do I feel even a small lift, and how can I give that a bit more space?
