What if Therapy isn't for you?
After reading this series, you might have come to one of two conclusions.
You may feel ready to contact a therapist. Or you may have decided that now isn't the right time.
Some final thoughts from me…
Therapy isn't the answer to everything
Therapists can be incredibly helpful, but we're not the answer to every problem.
Sometimes what people need is a difficult conversation with a partner. Sometimes they need a holiday. Sometimes they need better sleep, a new job or to reconnect with friends and family.
Therapy shouldn't replace living your life. It's simply one of many ways people choose to understand themselves and navigate difficult periods.
You have to want to be there
Therapy works best when you choose it for yourself.
Being encouraged by someone else is one thing. Feeling pressured into attending is another.
You don't have to be enthusiastic, but it helps if some part of you is curious about whether things could be different.
There are other ways to look after yourself
Therapy is only one form of support.
Some people benefit from support groups. Others find exercise, creativity, volunteering, faith, journalling or spending time outdoors helps them reconnect with themselves.
Sometimes the most helpful thing is simply talking honestly to someone you trust.
You can always come back
Deciding that now isn't the right time doesn't mean therapy isn't for you.
Life changes. Priorities change.
Sometimes people aren't ready until months or even years after they first considered it.
That's okay. Therapy will still be there if, and when you need it.
So... what if therapy isn't for you?
Then I hope this series has still been useful.
If it's helped you understand therapy a little better, or encouraged you to think differently about your wellbeing, then it's done its job.
Whether you choose therapy, another form of support or simply decide to keep reflecting for now, I hope you continue moving towards a life that feels more like your own.
