When your therapist takes a break

Every so often, your therapist will take a break. Maybe it's a few days, maybe a few weeks. And even if it’s planned, agreed, and totally understandable… it can still stir something.

You might feel fine about it — or you might not. Maybe there’s a flicker of abandonment, or a worry that you’ll lose momentum. Maybe there's a surprising relief. Whatever shows up is welcome, because this is part of the work too: noticing what absence brings.

Therapists need rest, just like anyone else. We are not immune to burnout, to life’s curveballs, to the need for replenishment. Taking time away allows us to return more grounded, more available, more able to hold space — not just because we’ve rested, but because we’ve honoured the boundaries that keep the work safe and real.

If a break is coming up, talk about it. Wonder out loud. Let the space between sessions become part of the conversation, not a gap to be endured alone.
